Entrepreneurship in Established Firms

The first lecture of the Corporate Entrepreneurship core course took place at the Erasmus Center for Entrepreneurship

This is the first lecture of the course Corporate Entrepreneurship (BMSE04) 2019-2020. The course is a mandatory component of the Master of Science (MSc) in Strategic Entrepreneurship programme and teaches students how organizations can balance advantage-seeking (strategic management) with opportunity-seeking (entrepreneurship) activities.

Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University

In this lecture, Lotte Glaser and I discussed the importance of Corporate Entrepreneurship (CE) and the difficulties that organizations face when they try to implement a CE strategy. Entrepreneurial behavior (or intrapreneurship) of individual employees lies at the heart of the CE process. We described the difference between top-down and bottom-up strategies, arguing that a top-down approach to CE entails a formal tolerance of informal entrepreneurial behavior. We also compared the different roles played by top-, middle-, and operational managers in the execution of CE initiatives.

Guest Lecture by Alrik Boonstra (Jumbo Supermarkets)

This year, our students will explore the case of Jumbo (one of the largest supermarket chains in the Netherlands) to learn more about the challenges of managing an entrepreneurial organization in a competitive environment. At the end of the course, they will provide Jumbo's top management team with recommendations on how to become the supermarket of the future. Alrik Boonstra, Jumbo's Executive Directer Human Resources, gave an exciting presentation about the company to kick-start the case assignment.
