organizing the 2nd Annual Paper Development Workshop in October this year. The goal of the annual Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) Paper Development Workshop is to help scholars who use NCA in their research to write a convincing paper that makes a valuable contribution to the literature. The paper development workshop is one of the many events organized by the NCA Development Team. If you are looking for a more hands-on workshop or webinar on the application of NCA, please have a look at our Events and Training page.

A Network Perspective on Corporate Entrepreneurship

This dissertation develops and tests a network perspective on corporate entrepreneurship.

The first NCA paper development workshop

A summary of the first Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) paper development workshop that took place on October 14, 2021.

NCA Paper Development Workshop 2021

The Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) Paper Development Workshop helps scholars write convincing NCA papers.

Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA): Logic, Theory, Methodology, and New Applications

Workshop Description

In this workshop you will learn how to conduct Necessary Condition Analysis. This emerging method was recently published in the journal Organizational Research Methods (2016, 2018) and in the Sage book “Conducting Necessary Condition Analysis” (2020). NCA is now used in many fields including Strategy, OB, HRM, Operations, and Entrepreneurship and International Management.

NCA understands cause-effect relations as “necessary but not sufficient” and not as additive and average logic that is used in regression analysis. “Necessary” means that an outcome will not occur without the right level of the condition, independently of the rest of the causal structure (thus the condition can be a “bottleneck”, “critical factor”, “constraint”).

Is High Innovative Performance without Brokerage Possible? NCA can be used to test whether a condition (X) is necessary but not sufficient for an outcome (Y). It provides a new perspective on existing phenomena and is complementary to the regression-based modeling that we usually apply. When a condition is necessary for an outcome, the outcome does not exist without the condition. The condition serves as a “bottleneck”, “critical factor”, or “constraint”. This resonates with the social networks literature in which the limitations of certain relationships or network positions are often considered. NCA allows us to quantify those limitations and to answer questions like “is a brokerage position necessary for creativity?”, “is a closed network position necessary for trust?”, and “are positive ties necessary for a person’s wellbeing?”. This interactive workshop will teach participants the logic and importance of necessary conditions, illustrated with examples form different fields. We will also compare NCA to other methods, such as regression analysis. The workshop will help participants to become the first users of NCA in their field, with hands-on instructions about how to build necessity theories, and how to analyze data for testing such theories using the NCA R software.

An Introduction to Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) for Strategic Management Research

This workshop provides an introduction to Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) for strategic management research

Is High Innovative Performance without Brokerage Possible?
Description

It is a well-established notion that the network positions of employees can constrain or stimulate the generation of novel ideas. The social network literature traditionally distinguishes between brokerage and closure, thereby positing that closed network positions serve as straitjackets that limit the ability of employees to identify and pursue promising opportunities. More recent studies challenge this claim and argue that employees can compensate for the potential drawbacks of closed networks when their personal characteristics match their social environment. A question that has remain unanswered, however, is whether employees can fully compensate for a lack of brokerage or if they can only do so up to the maximum degree associated with their network position.

Do You Need to Be a Broker to Be Innovative?
