Abstract

This research investigates the necessary conditions for team creativity, focusing on team size, team network, and team members’ expertise in the context of R&D. The literature suggests each of these conditions are necessary but fail to provide evidence of such necessity logic. By analysing the necessary conditions in teams that generated 76 hydrogen energy patents from 2010-2020, we find that large team sizes and high levels of team expertise are necessary for achieving high levels of team creativity. This study fills a gap in the literature by empirically demonstrating the necessity of these factors, offering a more detailed description of the essential factors that must be in place for team creativity to occur. Hence, understanding how team size, team network, and team expertise are necessary conditions for team creativity, can guide the composition of R&D teams; can help in structuring their collaborations; and leverage their competence to enhance creative outputs and drive innovation for their organisations.
