Andreas Al-Laham Best Paper Award
EGOS Standing Working Group 07: Organization(al) Networks: Between Structure and Process
July 10, 2021

Standing Working Group 07 of the European Group for Organizational Studies, Organization(al) Networks: Between Structure and Process, gave our paper Who steps up after a merger? its Andreas Al-Laham Best Paper Award 2021. I wrote the paper with Lotte Glaser and Justin Jansen of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

The paper looks at who takes the initiative to improve how work is done after two organizations merge. Employees who span the boundary between the two former organizations take charge less often, while employees close to such boundary spanners take charge more often, especially when they identify weakly with the new organization.

The working group gives the award in its sub-theme at the yearly EGOS Colloquium. In 2021 that was sub-theme 07, Meaning and Social Networks within and between Organizations, convened by Julia Brennecke, Francesca Pallotti and Leon Oerlemans. The colloquium, hosted by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, took place online from 8 to 10 July 2021. I presented the paper on 9 July, in the session Innovation and the Role of Diversity, Inclusion and Networks.
