Join the Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) workshop in Boston

On Friday, August 9 I will give a Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) workshop at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Boston together with Sven Hauff, and Henk van Rhee. The workshop is designed for people who are not familiar with NCA or want to refresh the basics. Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) is a method that can be used to determine if a condition is necessary for an outcome or not. Read more...

Using Necessary Condition Analysis to Identify Essential HR Practices

An excellent review of the literature on strategic Human Resource Management shows that Necessary Condition Analysis can be used to move the field forward. Strategic Human Resource Management is a term that describes all the Human Resource practices and activities that an organization uses to achieve its goals (Wright & McMahan, 1992). Together, these HR practices form a system in which synergies and complementarities between the practices improve the effectiveness of the system as a whole. Read more...

Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) in Three Steps: A Demonstration

We wrote a guide that shows how you can conduct a complete Necessary Condition Analysis in only three steps. It is freely available as PDF on ResearchGate. To prepare for the NCA workshop that my colleagues and I gave at the Academy of Management Annual meeting in Chicago, I wrote an R Markdown file that demonstrates how easy it is to conduct a Necessary Condition Analysis. Anyone who knows just a little bit of R should be able to follow it and apply NCA to his or her own dataset. Read more...

Now Available: A Statistical Significance Test for Necessary Condition Analysis

It is now possible to use a statistical significance test to assess whether a Necessary Condition observed in a dataset is based on random chance or not. Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) can be used to determine if a certain condition is necessary but not sufficient for a certain outcome. For example, intelligence is necessary for creativity (Karwowski et al., 2016) and trust is necessary for successful buyer-supplier collaborations (Van der Valk et al. Read more...

Join the NCA Professional Development Workshop at AOM 2018

I am co-organising a professional development workshop on Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) during this year’s Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Chicago. The workshop will be hosted by professor Jan Dul, who will provide a general introduction to NCA and compare its logic with the traditional regression approaches. I will present one of my working papers in which NCA is the primary methodology as an illustration. My colleague and fellow doctoral student Henk van Rhee will do the same. Read more...
